How to Store a Boat or RV for Winter in Texas
Getting your boat or RV ready for a Texas winter takes more than just parking it. Here's what actually matters before you store it.
Texas winters are mild compared to most of the country, but "mild" doesn't mean your boat or RV can just sit untouched for a few months. Humidity, sudden cold snaps, and pests can all do real damage if you don't prep it right before storing it.
Clean It Before You Store It
Dirt, salt, and grime left on a boat or RV over winter can eat into the finish and attract pests looking for a place to nest. Give it a full wash, dry it completely, and check for any spots where water could pool.
Protect the Battery
Cold snaps are hard on batteries, even in Texas. Either disconnect the battery entirely or hook it up to a trickle charger so it doesn't die sitting in storage. Nothing worse than pulling your RV out in spring to a dead battery.
Watch for Moisture
Texas humidity doesn't take a winter break. Crack a roof vent if your RV has one, use moisture-absorbing packs inside, and avoid storing it fully sealed up if you can help it. This matters even more for boats with enclosed cabins.
Cover What You Can
If you're not storing in a fully covered unit, a quality cover matters. It protects against UV damage, sap, bird droppings, and general wear, even during the cooler months.
Choose the Right Storage Unit
Not all storage is built for the size and shape of a boat or RV. You need wide drive lanes, enough clearance for the height of your vehicle, and ideally a facility close enough to home that you can check on it or run the engine occasionally over winter.
